9/11, I will never forget

Hello Euthenia Marketing blog followers!  This blog will not be about marketing, social media, or SEO.  I feel it necessary for me to put down in words some of my feelings about 911, how it affected me then and how I still struggle to handle it now.

It’s hard to believe it has been 10 years since the attacks on the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and the American Airlines flight 93.  On that beautiful day I went into work going about my usual business when my husband called me and told me to put the TV on because a plane just hit a building in New York.  I quickly ran to the TV’s in our office and minutes later witnessed the second plane strike the tower.  I still had my husband on the phone and was confused thinking this was a rerun of the plane that hit, but he quickly explained this was a second plane that plummeted into the 2nd tower.

Astonished at what I had just seen, I notified the rest of the staff of these horrific events.  We continued to listen to news briefs on the radio and TV trying to catch a glimpse of what was to be the worst terror attack on US soil.  There was almost an eerie feeling in the air not knowing what was going on, but concerned that other big cities such as Chicago could be next.  Pandemonium hit the city with people evacuating large buildings, trains overcrowded with people trying to exit the city, and interstate highways in gridlock.

We finished the day at work listening intently with heavy hearts.  I remember listening to the news radio in the car on my way home and crying uncontrollably for the many people who lost their lives in the buildings and in the plane.   I thought for sure we would be going to war by the end of that week and knowing my two sons, one 23 and one 18 at the time could be drafted.  For close to a month I was in a state of anxiety and mourning along with millions of other Americans who felt helpless.

We had no idea of what kinds of after effects such an event can produce and to this day the images still haunt me.  I still get tears in my eyes when I see bits and pieces of the images, but I hold my head high seeing hundreds of thousands of people working together, helping each other even 10 years later.  I believe as a nation we are still healing for those of us who experienced it as adults.  It is up to us to continue to keep the legacy of all the men and women who lost their lives that day, by educating our young Americans so we Never Forget.

Is your business thinking of using Twitter as a Marketing Strategy?

Many people I speak to really don’t know much about Twitter other than people throwing out spur of the moment information like what are they doing, where have they been, and what are they thinking about eating next. Sure, some of twitter is composed of the mundane rituals described above but not all of twitter is filled with useless information.

The next complaint we hear about Twitter is that it is just to follow your favorite rock or movie star, like an online version of TMZ. What they may not know is how powerful Twitter can be. Revolutions have started and Twitter was the primary source of communication among those individuals.

There is a whole other side to Twitter that is useful and intelligent.  Everyday people are not only talking about what’s for dinner, they are sharing information such as articles, pictures, blogs, and statistics.

How can Twitter help business?  Believe it or not, we have some clients in the medical field that you would think would not be appropriate for Twitter. But if you take a minute to look at some of our posts for them, you can start to understand how it can enhance your social media presence and put out some good information for any type of business. By providing relevant content, your business will stand out and people will start to engage with your business. Who doesn’t want more brand recognition?

Why and how could your business use Twitter?

Our first suggestion is to determine what your objectives are for social media in your marketing plan. Then delve into how your business should use Twitter, and what it can do for your business.

  • Can just one platform such as Facebook be your only online link?
  • Would you prefer to reach out to as many people as you can?
  • Do you want instant feedback about your product or service?
  • Do you want to know what your customers or the general public is saying about your business?
  • Do you want to provide useful information to your prospective clients or customers?
  • Can you use it to determine trends in your industry?
  • Do you want to connect with others in your industry?
  • Do you just want to offer deals through social media platforms?
  • Do you want to provide customer service?

There are many skeptics that say Twitter is not a good platform for businesses.  We have had good results for our clients by working with them to determine what their goals are and incorporating Twitter into their plan.  We don’t ask why anyone would use Twitter, but we ask how it will help their online marketing strategy.

Confused as I am about Health Care Reform?

Some of my latest blogs in the health care reform series talk about ACO’s and Medical Homes.  This concept is getting closer to implementation and there are still many debates on what they actually are.  Some experts say a Medical Home is part of an ACO, whereas other experts are separating them as two entities.  There are alternative pilot programs called Pioneer ACO models.  You can choose to participate in one of two ACO’s with different reimbursement models.  Is your head spinning yet or did you read the 434 pages of the bill that was recently released?
Sure, the goal is to improve health care for patients while lowering costs.  But why does it have to be so complicated?   Physicians and hospitals are all in agreement to improve quality of care and keep costs down.   Can Physicians be assured that by joining an ACO or Medical Home that this will really happen?  Medicare has already underestimated the startup cost of ACO.  Will this cost the physician in the long run?
Hospitals and private practice managers have a lot of work cut out for them over the next couple years.  There are many more questions than there are answers.  Personally, I like the concept idea of a Medical Home.  This concept has nothing to do with money or incentives.  It’s common sense.  I’ve been lucky to have 1st hand knowledge of a private practice that works like a Medical Home already.  This specialty practice coordinates care with the primary physicians, and any other ancillary physicians for their patients for the time they are treating the patient.
This concept isn’t new; it’s their Standard of Care.  The ACP and other medical organizations should be at the helm of getting this type of process in place for all physicians, this first step might be the most beneficial and economical way of healthcare reform.

Google+'s Stream & what a Post looks like

In my last blog about Google+'s features, I wasn't able to log in. Last night I got a second attempt at an invite to work. So far, I'm liking what I am seeing. It is very intuitive and clean looking. For those of you that may be thinking learning a whole new platform would be a daunting task, don't worry because there are similar features found in Facebook, but taken a step or two further.

For the timid, this blog will focus first on the Stream, which is similar to Facebook's Newsfeed. Although similiar, the stream is slightly different. The stream is content that has been shared specifically with you by people in your circles and also a collection of people who share information with you but may not necessarily be in your circle.

Circles function similar to your real-world circles of fiends, family, co-workers, and acquaintances. I put all of my family in a Circle, friends in another Circle, etc. This makes sharing content easier by directing specifically which circle can see a specific post, image, video, article, or link. Google has a video on Circles.

Here's a screenshot of my very first post on Google+ :

Upon looking at the image, it appears similar to a Facebook post. Take a closer look though. Above my actual post is my name, the time I posted, and the word "Limited".  What does Limited mean?

When one is about to post a statement, video, link, or photo, they have the option to post it publicly to everyone, to extended circles, or to a limited group. I had chosen to only share that post with my Circle called Family. Hence the word Limited on my post. Since this is my post, if I click Limited at, I will see the profile pictures of everyone that I shared it with. If someone else posted with Limited, I can click Limited to view the profile pictures of up to 21 other people who also can see that post. I can click through to a specific person's profile or add them to one of my circles.

Have you been noticing all the +1's in your Google searches? Michael Perry clicked on the +1 button on my post. That is similar to the Like button on Facebook, by expressing that you like, agree with, or recommend a piece of content on the Internet. The +1 helps Google improve the content you see in searches. Watch this video on +1.  People can also comment and share on your post.

What do you think of Google+? Do you think it will take down Facebook? Or will they share the marketplace?

5 Features of Google+

Google never stops trying to take over the world! As long as they abide by their motto, “do no harm”, I’m okay with that. Their anticipated big launch is Google+, a social networking site. I know what you’re thinking... Google Wave was a bust. Google Buzz was a bust. Will Google+ also be a bust?

I’m not so sure. They have a great premise here. I find that with Facebook, when I post a photo, I would love to have the ability to share that photo with only certain people. Facebook doesn’t work like that. If you post a photo, any one of your friends can see it.

From what I have gathered, as I am not a part of the beta yet, is that you will have the ability to put all of your “friends” into certain circles. Shocker, Google calls this “Circles”. One can put their friends into one circle, their co-workers into a different circle, family in another, and so on.

What a fantastic concept! I like to think of this as targeted sharing. Not everyone on my “friend” list on Facebook cares to read my many article posts on libraries. (I love libraries and think they are very important to society.) Nor do some people care to see my many many many posts of food that I am eating at a new restaurant! With Google+ I can designate which Circle gets to see what post!

Going along with Circles, another feature of Google+ is the Instant Upload. More and more people are taking pictures directly from their phones.  Photos will instantly update from your phone to a private album on Google. From there, you can direct your photos who different Circles. No more looking for the cable that links your phone to your computer or having to use programs like Dropbox.

The next feature is Hangouts, I’m really not sure how this will work. It’s an “unplanned meet-up” on the web. One let’s a group of people know they would like to hang out and then wait for them to meet you online. I believe it will work similar to a chat style setting.

Sparks is a recommendation system. You type in what you are interested in, and it will recommend based upon your interest.

Another feature is Huddle, and I am very interested in this aspect. How many times have you sent out a text blast to your friends to see what is happening for the day or night? And don’t you wish that those same friends could see the responses from the others? Well now you can! Huddle turns the texts into a group chat.

Do you think Google+ can compete with Facebook? Do you think it will succeed or fail? What feature would you be most interested in?

In the Realm of Pay for Performance.......

I have been in the healthcare field for the last 25 years and have seen the many challenges that medical practices have had to deal with.  From fee for service to HMO’s to managed care and now to the Pay for Performance realm, the future for healthcare is once again showing it colors like a true chameleon.

How do physicians, healthcare providers, support staff and patients keep up with all these changes? How are practices going to provide the best of care we Americans are so used to and expect when the rules change every month?  How can physicians afford to keep experienced staff to continue providing excellent care?

Challenges have faced us through the years and will continue, but with one caveat, lower reimbursement.  We in healthcare are not opposed to change; as a matter of fact we welcome it.  We understand that with change comes improvement and efficiencies.  Usually when someone improves efficiency or saves a company money, they are rewarded with a bonus or salary increase.  That does not happen in healthcare.  We are expected to have these efficiencies with the least amount of staff and with the least amount of reimbursement from the insurance companies.  And we have to prove it.

Pay for performance has been around for many years but is now going to be required in many aspects.  What does this mean, it means more work for less money.  I hope the lawmakers, insurance companies and the rulemakers open their eyes to the ramifications of instituting the many rules, regulations and validations they keep putting upon the healthcare field.

How Many Healthcare Challenges Have You Seen? What Challenges are you facing now?

What is a Medical Home in an ACO?

In my previous blog, I mentioned the phrase “medical homes” as part of the ACO.  Well what is a Medical Home and how will that impact the way you seek out medical care for an ailment or injury?

Medical Homes are set up to promote a team care approach to care of a patient through a spectrum of disease states and across the various stages of life.  Overall coordination of care is lead by a personal physician with the patient serving as the focal point of all medical care.

The goal in the Medical Home is for a team of providers to care for a patient seamlessly and efficiently, while managing costs.  In a Medical Home a primary care physician assists patients who need specialist care, maintains electronic records of all patient/provider interactions, communicates with all of the patient’s caregivers, and tracks the patient’s progress.

How does this differ from what we are doing now?  When you have a specific ailment, how often do you seek medical attention from a specialist right off the bat?  Many of us do, we bypass our primary care physician and go directly to the specialist.  Many times the primary care physician could have managed the problem without going to a specialist, which in turn would have kept the cost down.  And by having your PCP (primary care physician) be the center of your medical care, he or she can navigate you to the proper specialists forgoing incorrect costly appointments.

ACO’s pose many questions, concerns and arguments searching for the most efficient way to delivery healthcare in the future, but this one concept seems to be an easy solution that we can all agree on.

6 Mistakes Of Brochure Creation

Every practice or business needs a brochure. Some brochures, if not done correctly, can become ineffective if not put together properly. There are 6 common mistakes to avoid when creating a brochure.

1. Objectives not being clearly stated. What is the main objective of the brochure? Clearly define the goals you want and what type of call to action that you want achieved by the patient or client.

2. Using generic templates. Not all brochures are created equal. In this day and age of visual stimulation, people can easily tell if a template was used.

3. Choosing the wrong brochure size. Decide what you are using your brochure for, how you plan on using the brochure to market, and then decide what size will work best for your needs. Do not base this off of content.

4. Not putting the heart of the practice or business into the brochure. People want to make a connection and to establish a relationship.

5. Copying the competition's brochures. One of the main goals of marketing is to get noticed and differentiate the practice or business from the competition. Following suit with how the competition's brochures look is defeating the purpose.

6. Visually pleasing isn't everything. Just because your brochure is visually pleasing does not mean it will succeed. At the base of any brochure is content and calls to action.

New Mammogram Recommendations?

November 2009

Dr. Mehmet Oz is everywhere. You can’t turn on the TV, read the newspaper, or even walk down the street without seeing his face or an advertisement about his TV show. Of course I am a fan of his on Facebook, along with 192,647 others. America has been undeniably tuning into the healthcare industry recently with the upcoming healthcare reform bill. Since healthcare is such a hot topic right now, the media has been coving a story on early mammogram detection.

Yesterday Dr. Oz posed the question via his Facebook page, “So what do you all think of the new recommendations that women not get mammograms until age 50, instead of age 40?” Amazingly, 2,629 people responded. Most people were outraged that the government and insurance agencies could even be suggesting this. For years the American Cancer Society has been preaching early detection, with women receiving mammograms at age 40 and self breast examinations. For the government and insurance agencies to say now that there is no supportive evidence of early detection being beneficial just boils down to money since it costs more money for women to be undergoing the mammograms at an early age.

Below is a statement from Otis W. Brawley, M.D., chief medical officer, American Cancer Society.
“The American Cancer Society continues to recommend annual screening using mammography and clinical breast examination for all women beginning at age 40. Our experts make this recommendation having reviewed virtually all the same data reviewed by the USPSTF, but also additional data that the USPSTF did not consider. When recommendations are based on judgments about the balance of risks and benefits, reasonable experts can look at the same data and reach different conclusions.

“With its new recommendations, the USPSTF is essentially telling women that mammography at age 40 to 49 saves lives; just not enough of them. The task force says screening women in their 40s would reduce their risk of death from breast cancer by 15 percent, just as it does for women in their 50s. But because women in their 40s are at lower risk of the disease than women 50 and above, the USPSTF says the actual number of lives saved is not enough to recommend widespread screening. The most recent data show us that approximately 17 percent of breast cancer deaths occurred in women who were diagnosed in their 40s, and 22 percent occurred in women diagnosed in their 50s. Breast cancer is a serious health problem facing adult women, and mammography is part of our solution beginning at age 40 for average risk women. "

Benefits and Purchasing Tips For An EMR

Prescription drugs are the second most abused category of drugs. About 70 percent of Americans - approximately 191 million people - visit a health care provider, such as a primary care physician, at least once every 2 years. Thus, health care providers are in a unique position to prescribe needed medications.

We have all heard stories, have known someone, or have seen the TV show, Intervention, as to how addicts easily obtain prescriptions from multiple physicians in order to abuse prescription drugs. But what is stopping a person from obtaining various prescriptions from multiple different physicians?

The healthcare industry and the President’s 10 year EHR incentive plan is trying to combat this issue by first having physicians implement an EMR system. An EMR means “Electronic Medical Record”, which is an electronic version of a patient’s paper chart. It is a comprehensive record of a patient’s prescriptions, medical history, test records and diagnostic images. EHR and EMR sound like the same term, but EHR means “Electronic Health Record” and is a comprehensive collection of a patient’s healthcare records that will eventually be accessible by any physician in the country via the National Health Information Network.

A patient’s medical history becomes sharable national data. An EMR is the first step to achieving a national EHR system. By implementing a national, sharable system, physicians will have a clear and comprehensive view of a patients medical record which will in turn decrease the number of prescriptions given to a patient.
There are many EMR companies and products to research when purchasing an EMR. Consider the following points when evaluating an EMR for a medical practice.

1. Understand the needs of the practice
Given the wide range of EMR companies, products, and features, consider writing out a list of what the practice wants most of an EMR in order to evaluate the financial impact.
2. Study workflow
Document and make a detailed diagram of the tasks performed and who currently performs them at each stage of the patient’s visit in order to study the workflow in a paper environment.
3. Quantify the changes
Where and how will implementing an EMR save time and money?
4. Billing
Will implementing an EMR help generate additional revenue in the billing department by ensuring accurate coding?
5. Negotiate
EMR companies will negotiate on price due to increased competition. Haggle away.
6. Install and train
After investing a lot of money into the EMR system, make sure staff is trained properly in order to see increased revenue and an efficient work flow.
7. Eliminate paper charts
Don’t allow the practice to get stuck managing paper records and an expensive EMR simultaneously. Obtaining an EMR is a financial opportunity; don’t let it become a liability.

It will take time for the national EHR system to be fully operational but the necessary steps are being taken now to insure that one day it will be harder for patients to abuse prescription drugs.
